Walnut Seven Drawer Altar Table
£5,495.00
Shanxi, circa 1860
This gorgeous altar table is in walnut, with a beautiful golden brown colour and tone to the wood. Walnut is prevalent around Shanxi province where this was produced and is considered a superior wood to the more common elm, often used for high quality pieces of furniture. The raised ends, ending in a scroll design, suggest that the table would have been used as an altar, with the top surface used to display offerings to ancestors. Below the table top are seven drawers, each with a simple carved front and old ring handle set centrally. The sides of the table at the front and back incorporate carved spandrels that taper down to meet the legs. The table top and front have a lovely patina developed over the years and this would make a stunning console in a hallway or living space, with handy storage space inside the drawers.
