Shanxi Antique Elm Storage Cabinet
£2,495.00
Shanxi, circa 1830
This characterful sideboard originates from Shanxi province and dates to the early nineteenth century. Shanxi furniture from the period is admired for its strong, architectural forms and durability and this piece is a fine example. Constructed in solid elm, the sideboard retains its original dark lacquer, now beautifully worn and softened by nearly two centuries of use. The lacquer has mellowed to a deep, earthy tone, with areas of gentle distressing along the drawers, doors and frame that reveal the natural grain beneath and testify to the cabinet’s long life. The top surface in particular has a beautiful patina, showing the rich, wide grain of the elm wood.
The cabinet’s upper section comprises three drawers, each fitted with an elongated brass pull set into a shaped backplate. Below, a mismatched yet harmonious arrangement of cupboards is formed by two larger central doors and smaller compartments to the left—an asymmetry that is unusual in normally perfectly balanced Chinese design.
The metal fittings, including the distinctive shaped lock plates and drop handles, all show an aged patina. These heavy, pierced fittings were both decorative and practical, designed to withstand daily use in busy household settings. Inside, the main compartment includes a shelf for additional organisation, while the smaller left-hand cupboard offers separate storage for valuables or smaller household items.
Shanxi was one of China’s wealthiest provinces in the Qing dynasty, home to powerful merchant families and active regional trade routes. Furniture from the region favoured robust construction, strong lines and deep lacquer tones—qualities that made pieces like this both durable and visually grounding in the interiors of courtyard homes.
This sideboard’s combination of thick frames, practical layout and dark lacquer is highly typical of early 19th-century Shanxi furniture, where simplicity of form was elevated by the quality of the materials. With its understated design, large storage capacity and the quiet beauty of its time-worn surfaces, the sideboard would make a versatile addition to a contemporary interior. It would work beautifully in a dining room, hallway or living space, where the piece’s history and natural wear can be appreciated up close.
