Floral Painted Gansu Sideboard
£1,445.00
Gansu, circa 1900
This striking sideboard comes from Gansu province in western China and dates to around the beginning of the last century. Typical of the region’s distinctive painted furniture, the piece features brightly decorated door and drawer panels set within a deep black lacquer frame, giving it a bold and beautifully contrasting appearance. The front doors are inset with large painted panels bordered in red, each showing scenes of flowers, birds and landscapes. These designs were inspired by classical Chinese paintings and were believed to bring beauty, harmony and good fortune into the home.
Bamboo stalks on the left hand door are used to represent resilience and purity, while the pair of pigeons symbolise loyalty and family harmony due to the birds’ perceived love and commitment to their partners. On the right hand door the large spray of peonies denotes nobility, wealth and honour. Paired with the peonies the small songbird perched on a branch to the right – possibly an oriole or warbler – symbolises scholarly refinement.
Set into the apron below the doors are two smaller painted drawers, each showing detailed floral and natural motifs that add colour and charm to the base of the cabinet. Time has softened the surface beautifully, giving the artwork a warm, gently weathered patina characteristic of authentic Gansu furniture.
Furniture like this was produced in rural workshops around Gansu and Mongolia at the turn of the 20th century, where artisans worked with local pine or elm and decorated their pieces with vivid mineral pigments. The combination of a dark lacquer frame and brightly coloured panels is a distinctive regional style, originally used to add brightness to homes in the dusty, earthy landscapes of northwest China.
With its generous proportions, this sideboard provides useful storage while serving as a standout decorative piece. It would work beautifully in a living room, hallway or dining space, with its hand painted detail and rich colours bringing a unique touch of Chinese folk artistry to any interior.
