Dongbei, circa 1900

This elegant sideboard is finished in a warm red lacquer that has mellowed beautifully with age, giving the piece a rich, earthy tone and soft, natural patina. Made in northeast China and dating from the late Qing period, it has a simple, understated design that showcases the clean lines and practical craftsmanship typical of the region’s furniture-making traditions.

The cabinet is made from pine wood, in keeping with similar cabinets from the region. Originally the red lacquer surface, once much brighter, would have been decorated with auspicious floral symbols in gold set within a geometric pattern. The gold has largely worn away over the years, leaving only traces of the paintings on the doors. 

The old brass hardware, with rectangular lock plate and hinges, adds a soft golden contrast to the red lacquer. The two small floral shaped studs fitted on the outer frames are a lovely detail that is a distinctive feature of Dongbei pieces like this. All of the hardware retains an attractive, worn finish that speaks to the cabinet’s age and authenticity.

Cabinets of this type were commonly used in family homes to store clothing or household items and doubled as altar surfaces for ancestor worship. Their robust construction made them practical for everyday use, while the red lacquer provided a touch of auspicious colour—red being associated in Chinese culture with good fortune, vitality and celebration.

When first produced the cabinet included just the two central doors, with fixed panels on either side. The outer panels have been converted into additional doors to give easier access to the interior. The centre post can also be removed for convenience. With its spacious interior and understated elegance, the sideboard is ideal for a living room, dining space or hallway. It offers practical storage while blending effortlessly into both contemporary and more traditional interiors. Its warm red tones bring character and depth to any room, making it a versatile and timeless addition to the home.
