Dongbei, circa 1880

This elegant sideboard features a striking, deep red lacquer finish and is representative of the unique furniture found in China’s Dongbei region. Traditionally used for storage, these sideboards also functioned as altar tables for ancestral offerings and incense.

The rich red surface is adorned with intricate paintings showcasing a variety of plants and animals, as well as waterway scenes. These paintings are original and are framed with ornate geometric patterns in gold, featuring other symbols for good fortune. The square brass door handles add to the elegant look, blending seamlessly with the deep red and gold accents. Each outer frame also includes a small circular stud, a common feature on pieces like this.

Originally, the sideboard had only the two central doors, with fixed panels on either side. However, these outer panels have been reworked to add additional doors, hinged on wooden dowels, to provide full access to the interior. The center post can also be removed for convenience.
