Shanxi Elm Panelled Cabinet
£1,895.00
Shanxi, circa 1880
The small panels in the doors and outer sections of this lovely cabinet, set within rounded frames, are a feature of this style of furniture, which was common in China’s Shanxi province. The original finish, once much darker, has worn and aged to a wonderful patina, particularly towards the base of the cabinet, giving it a delightful warmth and character. A single narrow drawer sits between two wider drawers above the doors, with an extended top surface over the whole unit which is supported by beautifully carved spandrels. The doors themselves are fitted on rounded wooden dowels that slot into the cabinet above and below, so that no metal hinges are needed. There is a single removable shelf on the inside. In very original condition, this is a lovely example of the skill and attention to detail that went into making good quality Shanxi furniture.
