Teal Lacquer Tall Tapered Cabinet
£2,145.00
Shandong, circa 1920
This sleek, teal blue lacquered cabinet is in a classic Chinese ’round cornered’ style. The ingenious A-frame design includes doors that are mounted directly into the upper and lower frames of the cabinet on wooden dowels rather than metal hinges. This creates a pure, fluid, elegant look with a sense of upward movement. The door panels are fitted within rounded frames, with the top and outer frames, tapering out to the feet, also rounded.
This style of cabinet has been seen throughout China for centuries and is unmistakably oriental in appearance. This one dates from the early 20th century, but has been restored with a new lacquer and door hardware. The post between the doors is a removable – an aesthetic feature that was introduced later on in Chinese furniture. With two removable shelves and a removable board hiding the ‘secret’ bottom compartment, the cabinet is perfect as a statement piece in a living room or used for bedroom storage.
